What is the main barrier to disabled people participating in sport?

English Federation of Disability Sport North East is committed to improving opportunities for all disabled people to participate in sport and physical activity to the level of their choice. We work with the National Disability Sports Organisations, National Governing Bodies of Sport and the four Regional County Sports Partnerships to drive forward the development of Disability Sport.

› Free online training for Volunteers supporting disabled participants
AABS

The English Federation of Disability Sport Advocacy & Activity Buddy Scheme (AABS) has launched an online ‘E Learning’ site to train volunteers support disabled people to access sport or physical activity. The AABS training site is aimed at anyone wishing to support disabled people to access sport and physical activity within a club, group or leisure centre. It will reduce the time required by clubs to train their volunteers and make volunteering more accessible.

› Will Smith wins two bronze medals in the German Open Badminton Chamionships

The winner of the npower North East Young Male Achiever Disabilty Sport Award Will Smith has gained more success at the German open Badminton Chamionships in Dortmund. Competitors from across the world took part in the competition and Will won a bronze medal in the singles cometition and another with his new doubles partner, Alan Oliver from Scotland. Will and Alan have competed against each other but have not played together before - but following their success in Dortmund they will be partners again in the future.

› More success for regional athletes at the DSE Regional Championships

The North East’s top junior athletes competed in the DSE Regional Athletics Championships at Gateshead International Stadium on Friday 22nd May. Athletes from Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and the Tees Valley took part in both track and field competitions. Nationwide Building Society and npower once again supported the event which allows children aged 12 to 20 to progress to the National competition in Blackpool, npower volunteers were also on hand to assist with the running of the day.

› New Age Kurling 2009 British Singles Championship

The 2009 New Age Kurling British Singles Championships will be held at the Dolphin Leisure Centre, Horsemarket, Darlington the day after the Nations Cup international competition. There is no entry fee for this competition. To be eligible to enter, you or your club must be a member of your National Governing Body. In the case of the UK this is the Great Britain Kurling Association. Approximate timings for the competition are 9:30 to 18:00.
