Major Phil Packer has received the Helen Rollason award at the 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year show. The 37-year-old, who is a paraplegic after sustaining injuries while on duty in Iraq in 2008, defied doctors to complete the 2009 London Marathon. The Pride of Britain Fundraiser of the Year walked two miles a day on crutches to complete the epic feat in 13 days.

Family is something we all have in common. Regardless of age or stage, shape or size, belief or background. National Family Week promises something for everyone, and embraces families of all shapes and sizes. National Family Week is already the largest coalition on family issues in the UK. Charities, community groups, statutory bodies, schools, sporting and faith networks are all coming together to celebrate family life. National Family Week 2010 aims to be even bigger and better, engaging with more families, highlighting important issues through increased media coverage and creating broader social awareness of the good work done by all our not-for-profit partners.
During the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 21 November the IPC membership has decided in favour of the re-inclusion of athletes with an intellectual disability (ID athletes) in competitions, including the Paralympic Games.
