Sainsbury's Inclusive PE training shortlisted for global award

Beyond Sport today announced their annual Beyond Sport Global Awards Official Shortlist, showcasing 37 organisations that are successfully using sport to promote and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), in collaboration with Scottish Disability Sport, Disability Sport Northern Ireland, Disability Sport Wales, British Paralympic Association and the Youth Sport Trust, has been shortlisted for its Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE project. The project falls in the Sport for Equality category, where we face global competition from India, Burma and USA and Canada.

The 37 shortlisted organisations highlight a diverse portfolio of work. From organisations raising awareness of endangered marine habitats through sailing with fishermen in Vietnam; to the use of triathlon in empowering adolescent girls in Long Island; to a ground-breaking digital media training program which uses football to provide underserved youth with the skills, support and a public platform to make their voices heard. This year’s shortlist represents issues such as health, gender, STEM education, equality, climate change, accessibility and inclusion, tech and employability.

The Sainsbury's funded project aims to support teachers, school staff and trainee teachers to provide positive experiences for young disabled people in PE. Thousands have been trained so far and its impact has now been globally recognised.

Colin a trainee teacher at St Mary’s University London, recently told EFDS:

“Really, Sainsbury's Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training should be at the heart of every PE lesson in school. Activities should always be adapted to the abilities of the class.
“The strength of the training is that it gives confidence. Delivering inclusive PE may seem like a daunting prospect but really it's far simpler once you've been shown through the training how the smallest change can create a fully inclusive environment.”

Sainsbury's Inclusive PE creates a lasting legacy for disabled people after London 2012. Sainsbury’s committed investing over £1 million for five years to support this initiative. The four Home Country Disability Sport Organisations alongside Sainsbury’s, with support of ParalympicsGB and the Youth Sport Trust, have joined forces in its delivery.
