New website for NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit

The NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) has today launched a new website to ensure all sports organisations have access to the resources they need to safeguard children.

 The website, supported by Sport England, will provide sports organisations with the most up to date advice, guidance and practice on safeguarding children in sport.

The CPSU, which was set up in 2001 following a series of high profile cases of abuse of young athletes by those in positions of trust, has worked closely with funded National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) to improve safeguarding practices. Its mission is to safeguard children and young people in and through sport and enable sports organisations to lead the way in keeping children safe from harm.

Head of the CPSU Anne Tiivas said:

“Our aspiration is for all sports to provide the same, consistently high standard of safeguarding for all children and young people. Since the CPSU was set up in 2001, we have worked closely with funded NGBs and seen an amazing amount of progress in the way that they safeguard children. We want to extend our support to ensure that the hundreds of thousands of children participating in sports governed by recognised but non-funded NGBs receive the same level of protection. Our new website will be invaluable in helping us achieve this aim.”

Sport England’s Director of Community Sport, Mike Diaper, said:

“This new website will help our partners to put children’s welfare at the heart of sport, by giving them easy access to up-to-date guidance. Every young person has the right to enjoy sport in a safe, welcoming environment."

The website features a free resource library containing video clips, practice briefings, template forms, policy statements and downloadable toolkits, all of which will help organisations ensure they have the right safeguards in place. New content and resources will be added regularly over the upcoming months.

The Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) (established in 2001) is a partnership between the NSPCC, Sport England, Sport Northern Ireland and Sport Wales. Its counterpart in Scotland is the Child Protection in Sport Service, a partnership between CHILDREN 1st and Sport Scotland. These organisations work with governing bodies and other organisations to minimise risk to children in sport.
