Elite disabled athletes combine sport and study at University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham is offering elite disabled athletes the opportunity to combine a top class education with a sporting infrastructure which supports their development.

Nottingham’s Sports Department has an excellent support programme in place for elite athletes, which includes sports bursaries, strength and conditioning coaching, physiotherapy, mentoring, sports buddying and nutritional support. The University has great sports facilities (which we are continuing to develop) and good links with local sports clubs, national governing bodies and national disability sports organisations.

Assistant Director of Sport (Performance), Nigel Mayglothling, is keen to highlight the University’s pedigree and ambitions moving forward. He said:

“The University of Nottingham has an outstanding record for supporting elite athletes in an academic environment, ranking as the top University at London 2012. As the only British University with a dedicated Disability Sport Officer we especially welcome applicants aspiring to combine a Paralympic ambition with an outstanding international education.”

Featured in the video below is Thomas Green, who is one of the University’s former sports bursars and is in the top ten in the world for club throwing (F32). Whilst he has been studying at Nottingham, he has become World Junior Champion (2011) and has also competed every year in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Athletics Championships – winning three consecutive titles.

Thomas has just graduated with a first class degree in Mathematics– demonstrating, although a challenge, that it is possible to combine your studies and training– with successful outcomes.

In this video Thomas talks about the support that he has received whilst studying at Nottingham and the benefits that it has had on his development and sporting achievements.

If you would like to find out more about the opportunities available to you, as an elite disabled athlete at the University of Nottingham, please contact either Nigel Mayglothling (nigel.mayglothling@nottingham.ac.uk) or Hannah Webber – Disability Sport Officer (hannah.webber@nottingham.ac.uk)

Thomas is also happy to receive your Twitter questions via @tjg_clubber
