What is the ParAbility Football Project?

The project, initially supported by the Big Lottery Fund, has recently been enhanced through the FA’s 3-year Disability Football Development Fund and seeks to pro-actively engage with the disability community throughout the county.

The project’s primary aim will be to increase inclusive participation opportunities in the county; however, the project will also closely focus and monitor some of the following key objectives:

  • Support personal development of participants including social, physical and psychological
  • Increase and up skill, both disabled and non disabled volunteers and coaches, through the County FA’s accredited coach education programme and other specific disability training.
  • When desired, offer exit routes for players who wish to reach their football potential, through leagues and talent pathways

Additionally, the ParAbility Football Project is further supported through its own Strategic Group, who meet quarterly to discuss the project’s development. A selection of key representatives, throughout Cambridgeshire’s disability sector, provides support and guidance around project proposals through their diverse experience and knowledge.

The group, chaired by Sue Platt from Pinpoint, consists of representatives from:

Pinpoint      Cambridgeshire County Council           Papworth Trust
Cambridge City Council                 Action For Children          Living Sport           Castle School       Cambridge Regional College     Cambridgeshire FA

Cambs FA’s Disability Football Development Officer, Robert Reeve, said:

“We’re delighted to have received funding from the Big Lottery Fund and the FA to develop the disability football programme in Cambridgeshire. Primarily the aim of the ParAbility Football Awareness Week is to showcase these fantastic new opportunities available to disabled people in the county, not just participation, but workforce and voluntary openings as well. It’s great we’re also able to interact with the wider disability community through our ParAbility Football Strategic Group. The two meetings we’ve had already have proved to be extremely constructive, with plenty of positive outcomes”.
