Aston Villa Foundation takes up inclusive activity training

It’s Coaching Week 2019 – UK Coaching’s campaign to bring #GreatCoaching to more local communities. Today, Activity Alliance celebrates Aston Villa Foundation becoming England’s first football foundation to take up our Inclusive Activity Programme. The programme supports coaches, community activators and healthcare professionals to make activities more inclusive and accessible to disabled people.

In March 2019, Aston Villa Foundation became the first football foundation in England to take up Activity Alliance’s Inclusive Activity Programme as a training opportunity for their staff, coaches and volunteers. Eight community activator coaches and apprentices took part in the three-hour workshop to improve their skills and confidence to adapt activities and exercises for disabled people in the local community.

During the workshop, participants were introduced and supported to apply the STEP tool (Space, Task, Equipment, People) and Activity Inclusion Model to various activities.

After the workshop, Aston Villa Sport and Activity Leader Apprentice, Dru, told us why he would recommend the programme to other coaches.

Dru said:

"I would recommend the Inclusive Activity Programme to anyone who is first starting off in coaching or delivering activities to disabled people because the programme allows you to fully understand how you can make your sessions more inclusive for everyone."

Dru is now planning to use his new skills and knowledge to fully engage all individuals in his sessions and explore parallel pathways for players.

Aston Villa Foundation is a registered charity that works to improve people’s lives through sport. They deliver projects and activities to local communities in four key areas: Sport and recreation, health and wellbeing, education and inclusion.

Activity Alliance is pleased to support Aston Villa Foundation to improve the delivery of sport and activity opportunities for disabled people across Birmingham. The Inclusive Activity Programme is delivered in partnership with UK Coaching and funded by Sport England National Lottery investment.
