New venue for table tennis players at nationals

Hosted for the first time at the University of Warwick Indoor Tennis Centre, the Disability Sport Events (DSE) National Table Tennis championships and part of the Grand Prix series, brought together experience and youth in a tantalising weekend of table tennis.

Players competed in the Class singles, Doubles and Open competitions over the 3 sessions of the event between Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July.

In the class events, youth and experience tackled each other in the Class 1-3 final and the class 7 final. Ashley Davis (WAL) beating Roger Hales (YRK) in a closely contested game to scoop the Class 1-3 prize. Meanwhile in the Class 7 final, young Billy Shilton (SWT) was edged out by Peter Cameron (SCO)

Ashley Davis triumphed again in partnership with Shaun Newcomb (SOE) in the wheelchair doubles before they went head to head in the final of the Mens Wheelchair A Open where Ashley completed his hat trick of titles winning through over five sets.

Adam Thompson (NWT) picked up the Class 11 singles title as well as the Mens Standing A Open title in a successful weekend for the Great Britain talent squad member.

Martin Perry (SCO) was presented with the Player of the Tournament after being nominated by the Umpires for his sportsmanship, conduct, team work and fair play.

Peter Taylor, Chairman of British Table Tennis Association for players with disabilities (BTTAD) said

“On the eve of the Paralympics in London it is great to see the strength and depth of talent in table tennis by the number of players involved in the game at these championships and who will have their eye on putting on the Team GB shirt at Rio in 2016”
