Team GB's wheelchair rugby side aim to grab Rugby World Cup limelight

This evening, hosts England kick off the 2015 Rugby World Cup with a match against Fiji at Twickenham.

The tournament, which is 48 matches long, aims to increase the profile of the sport, with 2.3 million tickets already sold for games from Exeter to Newcastle.

But running alongside the start of the World Cup is the climax of the 2015 IWRF Wheelchair Rugby European Championship in Pajulahti, Finland.

Great Britain topped Pool A and meet Germany in today’s semi-final at 18:00 BST. Sweden play rivals Denmark in another semi-final, with the gold medal match on Saturday at 18:00 BST.

The top two finishers at this tournament will automatically qualify for the 2016 Rio Paralympics, so there is a lot at stake for participants.

Jamie Stead of Team GB said:

“We want to show everybody what we are capable of. But the job is not finished yet. The most important thing against the Germans is not to underestimate them - we'll have to fight hard to the last whistle.”

Success for Great Britain in Finland could provide that little extra bit of inspiration for the four Home Nations, as they battle to lift the Webb Ellis Cup in October.
