Team EFDS supporters raise awareness and funds at the Great North Run

Last Sunday, a team of EFDS fundraisers challenged themselves to take on the Morrison's Great North Run half marathon. The charity is proud to have so many supporters, working to make active lives possible.

Cited as the ‘world’s greatest half marathon’, our fundraisers joined thousands of runners through the streets of Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields.

Here are some fundraisers feeding back how they got on in the event.

Craig, a fundraiser in the great north run

Head teacher at Horndale County Infants and  Nursery school, Craig Brown:

"The race was a spectacular event. Training goes out of the window once you are running with so many people. You hear so many different reasons for people running- from the sad tales to the most uplifting reasons. I personally felt comfortable until I got the 8 mile mark at which point the last 5 miles was a long hard slog but the crowd were superb offering support as were fellow runners. A great experience."

Leila, a great north run fundraiser

Leila Reyhani, Community Sports Manager at GLL said:

This was the first time I had taken part in an organised long distance run. I was quite nervous but looking forward to it. Taking part in the Great North Run for EFDS was a privilege. I had never experienced an atmosphere where spectators, race staff and fellow participants all got involved cheering everyone one on. I was full of a cold and thought I would never make it but at times sheer emotion from reading messages on running tops, looking at pictures of those sadly lost and the realisation of why I was doing it, to raise money for EFDS spurred me on.

I enjoyed the whole experience, aches and all and would definitely do it again. I was more than happy to raise money for EFDS, I started my career as a disability sports coach and the enjoyment I got out of working with disabled children still makes me smile today. I have raised £315 so far and hope to keep adding to it.

I would recommend taking part in an event like this to everyone no matter what shape, size or ability, the sense of achievement when you cross the finishing line is amazing."

It could be you next year!
