Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training supports A Million Hands campaign

A Million Hands is an important, ongoing campaign by the Scout Movement, tackling the four issues that matter most to their young people – mental health, water sanitation, people living with dementia and those disabled by society.

Helping disabled people to access sporting opportunities and other forms of physical activity is key to the work of the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS).

One programme which EFDS supports is Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, which provides first step training to support parents, carers, support workers, healthcare professionals, volunteers and community based groups.

The Scout Movement, as part of the A Million Hands campaign, could benefit hugely from the lessons learned in Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training.

Are you a group leader or a senior Scout who helps organise activities? Then Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training has been developed to support you to introduce physical activity and sport to the disabled people you work with. No experience required.

Described recently as a “brilliantly interactive and diverse course” by a participant, the three hour practical workshop supported by online resources, during which participants will learn about practical tools to support inclusive delivery, explore creative ideas to support disabled people to take part in physical activity and sport and learn about local groups, activities and further training opportunities.

Another recent participant, Sheldon from Merseyside, said:

“The Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training programme has been great, especially if you don’t have a sporting background. The course gives you a chance to understand the different types of inclusive training.

“After learning theses skills I will be able to adapt them in any training course I go to. Also, I have learned how to adapt activity to people with disabilities and that’s excellent.”

Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, part of Active Kids for All, is supported by £1 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. This programme continues the momentum and creates a lasting legacy for disabled people after the London 2012 Games.

This initiative is being delivered through the English Federation of Disability Sport and sports coach UK.

A Million Hands emphasises to all Scouts the impact volunteering can have on improving the lives of disabled people.

The campaign, working in partnership with Leonard Cheshire Disability and Guide Dogs, emphasises that from reducing social isolation to removing barriers to participation in society, young people could improve the lives of disabled people.

The Scout Movement added:

“Leonard Cheshire Disability and Guide Dogs have designed activities to help your Group understand disability and, more importantly, take action to help improve the lives of disabled people.”

If you want to develop your knowledge and skillset further, in order to continue taking action to help improve the lives of disabled people, consider Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training.
