Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training 'is an important workshop'

Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is a workshop for those who support disabled people of all ages within the community, such as carers, support workers, parents, volunteers and community groups and organisations.

The training is designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who support disabled people to be more active, and is a creative and informal development opportunity.

And it was an opportunity seized by 13 community volunteers, who visited the Sobell Leisure Centre in north London for a workshop organised by Access Sport's Ignite Programme and delivered by sports coach UK.

Alongside the volunteers, US Open wheelchair tennis champion Jordanne Whiley attended in her role as Ambassador for the Ignite Programme.

Jordanne said on the day:

"This is an important workshop, particularly as this education is important in giving volunteers more confidence.”

The three-hour practical Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training workshop, complimented by online resources, was preceded by a talk presented by Jordanne on the role of supporters in sport.

Over 3,200 individuals have taken advantage of the informative and practical training that make up Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training.

On the day an attendee and volunteer, Kelly from Brixton BMX Club, said:

"I'm from a BMX background, and I came along to the course just to find out how I can help and how we can include anybody that wants to join in in one of our sessions.

“This one-day workshop has helped us to understand how we can creatively include lots of different young people at different skill levels into any activity and make it fun!"

And James, another volunteer from from Highgate Tennis Club, added:

"I was really engaged by the tutor. The course content was really relevant and insightful – I’ll now go and try to apply my learnings in the club."

Over the last 18 months, EFDS has been documenting the positive experiences of many who have participated in workshops. There are dozens of open workshops available to sign up to, all advertised on the EFDS website.
