Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training and Sport Relief success

Sport Relief 2016 came to a close over the weekend as tens of thousands of men, women and children took to the streets, swimming pools and schools at thousands of events across the UK to bring the total people involved in this year’s Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games campaign to over a million.

More than £55m was raised, a new record, with the funds set to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world's poorest countries.

Sainsbury’s has a record of helping create and influence positive change by supporting sports programmes and enterprises.

One such programme is Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, delivered by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) and sports coach UK.

The training is designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who support disabled people to be more active, and is a creative and informal development opportunity.

Over 3,750 individuals have taken advantage of the three-hour practical Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training workshop, complimented by online resources.

In recent weeks, EFDS has heard from enthusiastic participants, including Kelly from Brixton BMX Club:

“I'm from a BMX background, and I came along to the course just to find out how I can help and how we can include anybody that wants to join in in one of our sessions.

“This one-day workshop has helped us to understand how we can creatively include lots of different young people at different skill levels into any activity and make it fun!"

Additionally, physiotherapist Hayley Ramjattan said:

“I really liked the practical side of it, and the trainer was really very good, full of practical advice and with a world of experience. It was really good to be able to pick his brain about things.”

Over the last 18 months, EFDS has been documenting the positive experiences of many who have participated in workshops.

The workshop is for those who support disabled people of all ages within the community, and have an opportunity to put the training into practice.

For example; carers, support workers, parents, volunteers and community groups and organisations.

EFDS would like to congratulate all volunteers and others who participated in Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games and Sport Relief and helped raise that phenomenal record-breaking sum. Well done, all!
