Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE shortlisted for Charity Awards 2016
The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), on behalf of all of the Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE project partners, is delighted to announce that we have made the shortlist for this year’s Charity Awards.
The partners are delighted to be one of three shortlisted for the longest running and most prestigious awards scheme in the charity sector.
EFDS, in collaboration with the Youth Sport Trust, Scottish Disability Sport, Disability Sport Northern Ireland, Disability Sport Wales, and the British Paralympic Association has been shortlisted in the disability category for its Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE project.
The project aims to support teachers, school staff and trainee teachers to provide positive experiences for young disabled people in PE.
The Charity Awards is the sector’s most highly-regarded excellence recognition scheme. All 30 shortlisted charities this year have been judged by an independent panel of sector leaders as having demonstrated outstanding best practice from which other organisations can learn.
The 10 category winners, plus the recipients of the Overall Award for Excellence and the Daniel Phelan Award for Outstanding Achievement, will be announced at a ceremony and dinner on Thursday 9 June at the Mermaid Theatre in London’s Blackfriars.
The black-tie evening is hosted by former BBC Breakfast presenter Bill Turnbull, who will be joined by representatives of the shortlisted charities, alongside senior figures from the charity and civil society sector, and a smattering of celebrities from the worlds of theatre, television, music and sport.
Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE is a Paralympic legacy-inspired initiative, which focuses on developing and delivering training to increase the delivery of high-quality inclusive PE lessons.
The aim is to provide more young disabled people with a positive and inclusive experience of PE, which will translate into healthier, more active lifestyles.
There has been a significant, measureable impact thanks to the Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE training. To date, over 7,500 teachers, school staff and trainee teachers have received face-to-face training across the UK.
An estimated additional 16,500 people have benefited from the materials and/or peer-to-peer expertise sharing thanks to a ‘cascade effect’, and approximately 550,000 young people with special educational needs will have benefited from improved practice in school.
Tania Mason, editorial director at Civil Society Media which organises the Charity Awards, congratulated EFDS on making the highly-coveted shortlist. She said:
