Inaugural Visually Impaired Boccia National Championships

Boccia England, the National Governing Body and charity responsible for the management of the disability sport- boccia, are pleased to announce the inaugural Visually Impaired Boccia National Championship, taking place on Wednesday 3 July 2013.

Three regional visually impaired boccia competitions have taken place over the last six months in the North, Midlands and South, with the top players from across the country advancing to the national finals.

As the sport of boccia continues to rapidly develop, Boccia England strives to cater for individuals with all impairments. Adaptions were made to the traditional game of boccia to enable visually impaired and blind players to compete on an equal playing field. This variation of the sport is relatively recent and 2013 will be the first year that a National Championship will be held.

Visually impaired boccia is standardised using eye shades and players use a ‘tactile grid’ (a scaled down version of the boccia court) with the support of Sports Assistants to plot the grids from behind the court.

The National Championships event will take place on Wednesday 3 July 10.00-14.00 at the University Park Sports Centre, The University of Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7 2RD. Spectators and media welcome.
