Activity Alliance celebrates Volunteers’ Week

This week is Volunteers’ Week, a time to celebrate the contribution of millions of people who make a difference through volunteering.

Volunteers are crucial to the success of so much that Activity Alliance does. From our Get Out Get Active (GOGA) programme to our work at the London Marathon and our national junior swimming and athletics events. We want to celebrate and thank our volunteers who continue to support Activity Alliance and help us provide more inclusive and accessible opportunities for disabled people.

2023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June). We join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations in recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK. This is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering.

Volunteering success with Get Out Get Active

Since 2016, our GOGA programme has recruited over 3,300 volunteers to support the delivery of fun, inclusive activities for disabled and non-disabled people. In 2021, in partnership with Volunteering Matters, we created a Volunteer Management Toolkit. It provides our GOGA partners and other organisations with a step-by-step guide to building their own inclusive volunteering programme in sport and activity.

Bringing our key learnings and insight on supporting disabled volunteers together with external resources, the Toolkit features a roadmap and resources on how to deliver an inclusive and accessible volunteer journey. Topics include creating positive volunteer opportunities, recruitment, recognition, safeguarding, and measuring volunteer impact.

Kat Southwell, Head of Programmes at Activity Alliance said:

"Much of GOGA’s success is down to the many different people involved in the programme and the various roles they play. The Volunteer Management Toolkit supports organisations to do things differently and commit to organisational change that places volunteers at the heart of their programmes."

Inclusive training for volunteers

Our CIMSPA accredited Inclusive Activity Programme (IAP) is a fantastic option for organisations looking to help upskill their volunteers. It is ideal for the sport and leisure sector, community groups and organisations, disability organisations, and individuals supporting disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. The training is designed to support you to make physical activity more inclusive for disabled people. It consists of a short online e-learning module and a practical hands on workshop.
