Young para-swimmers set for National Championships

The National Junior Para-Swimming Championships are set to take place this weekend. More than 100 young para-swimmers from across the country will compete in the short course event in Coventry.

For many, these championships are a starting block for national competition. Several top world and Paralympic medallists have discovered their talent at this event. Elite athletes including Ellie Simmonds, Alice Tai, and Jessica Jane Applegate began their own success at the prestigious meet.

Organised by Activity Alliance in partnership with Swim England, it aims to increase participation and talent development opportunities for young disabled swimmers.

Jannine Walker, Activity Alliance National Events Manager said:

"It will be fantastic to see the next generation of talented swimmers compete once again in Coventry.
"This event is a great opportunity for young swimmers to experience a major event. It also acts as a pathway for those that want to go on and compete at the highest level.
"Activity Alliance works towards our vision, fairness for disabled people in sport and activity. Hosting the National Junior Para-Swimming Championships is a great example of how we ensure more disabled people can access more opportunities in sport and activity. We’re proud to have seen more than 5,000 talented young disabled people take part in our junior swimming programme over the years.
"Our thanks go to Swim England, CV Life and City of Coventry Swimming Club for their support with this event."

Two days of racing will take place at Coventry’s Alan Higgs Centre on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June. The Championships bring together young disabled swimmers from all over the UK, some competing for the very first time at a national level alongside established swimmers.

The field will consist of 10-18 years olds competing in Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Individual Medley and Butterfly.

Martin Lees, Swim England para-swimming development manager said:

"This is a great opportunity for young swimmers to compete against other athletes from across the country.
"It’s incredible to see the next generation coming through and with the World Para-Swimming Championships in Manchester just around the corner, we hope they’re inspired by the event to swim even faster this weekend.
"Hopefully these athletes will continue their swimming journey for years to come and are able to pull on their own international cap and swim in the World Championships themselves in the future.
"Swim England is extremely proud to be supporting this event and we wish the best of luck to everyone competing in Coventry."
