Welcome to the latest disability sports news round-up for April 2024.

Disability Sports Organisations are a good starting point for many deaf and disabled people who want to be more active. They provide advice, support, and opportunities for people of all ages with specific impairments to take part in sport and activity.

Special Olympics GB – April 2024

Lloyd runs into the Guinness World Record Books

Nineteen-year-old Lloyd, who has Down Syndrome, made history when he ran the TCS London Marathon in six hours, 46 minutes and 10 second, setting a new Guinness World Records title for the youngest person to complete a marathon.

Lloyd, from Camberley in Surrey, set his new World Record with the support of his Mum Ceri, who has run six marathons previously, including setting a Welsh national record in the 2021 London Marathon in the Masters W50 category.

British Blind Sport – April 2024

Essex ‘have a go’ day

British Blind Sport (BBS) is hosting a free sports taster event for blind and partially sighted people in Essex. The event will take place on Saturday, 11 May between 10am and 3.30pm at Mildmay Sports Centre. The event will feature a fantastic line-up of sporting activities for blind and partially sighted people of all ages and abilities to participate in alongside their friends and family. Activities available to try on the day will be announced in advance of the event.

Vicky Cook, Participation Officer at British Blind Sport, said:

"We are delighted to be hosting a 'Have a Go' Day in Essex to give blind and partially sighted people a chance to try out different sports and hopefully discover a new passion or hobby. Physical activity plays such an important role in living a happy and healthy life, our 'Have a Go' Days ensure that more people will get an opportunity to experience some of the activities available."

WheelPower – April 2024

Learn to Play Golf with WheelPower

On 15 May WheelPower will be hosting their very first Learn to Play Golf Day in Surrey. This brand new and free event will give adults with physical disabilities the chance to swing a golf club for the first time, or perhaps return to the sport as a disabled person following illness or injury.

The day will be co-hosted by Get Golfing, a charity who were established in 2018 with the desire to change the landscape of golf, and make golf truly accessible to all. Alongside the team from Get Golfing there will also be coaches from The Golf Trust and Motus Medical who will be bringing a number of standing powerchairs that allow disabled people who are paralysed or unable to stand for long periods the chance to stand over a ball and take a full swing.

LimbPower – April 2024

LimbPower Announces the 2024 Junior Games: A Celebration of Young Athletic Spirit

LimbPower is thrilled to announce the return of the much-anticipated LimbPower Junior Games, scheduled for Saturday 6 July 2024, at the iconic Stoke Mandeville Stadium. This annual event, a highlight in the adaptive sports calendar, is dedicated to empowering children and young people aged 4-18 with an amputation or limb differences through the joy of sport.

The LimbPower Junior Games, first held in 2013, have grown to become a cornerstone event that fosters inclusion, confidence, and camaraderie among participants. The 2024 games promise an array of sports, including Athletics, Cycling, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball, Swimming, Rowing, Canoeing, and Archery, all tailored to the abilities of young athletes with limb differences.
