Teachers in Wales are supported to deliver inclusive PE lessons

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), in partnership with the Home Country disability sport organisations and the Youth Sport Trust, deliver the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training Programme. Since 2013, the initiative has provided free training to over 9,500 teachers, trainee teachers and school staff across the UK, supporting them to deliver a high quality inclusive Physical Education to all pupils.

Last year, as part of the Sainsbury’s Active Kids Paralympic Challenge, and to coincide with the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, every primary school in the Welsh town of Ynys Mon received a free kit to introduce children to different Paralympic activities. To support teachers and school staff in the town and surrounding areas with using their kits to deliver inclusive PE lessons, Disability Sport Wales organised a Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training workshop.

The workshop was arranged to upskill the teachers, improve their confidence and give them new ideas for planning, delivering and assessing quality inclusive PE in their schools. In attendance were primary PE specialists, classroom assistants, trainee teachers and higher education staff.

One of the teachers at the workshop said:

“I think it is important to raise awareness and have the children doing different things within their PE lessons”.

Eleri, a classroom assistant, who also participated in the workshop, told EFDS how the training had made her appreciate the importance of attending PE lessons to support the children she works with to be more active.

“It really made me realise how important it is for me to go to the PE lessons with the children I work with - it is equally as important that I support them when they are being active, as it is when they are doing Welsh or Maths. Now I know some of the things I need to do to help the teacher make sure everyone has a brilliant time in PE and are involved rather than just watching or sitting out parts of the lesson.”

Another attendee at the workshop, a PE Specialist, said:

“This workshop has given me loads of ideas which I am going to share with my colleagues. Hopefully my colleagues will see they know quite a lot of it and this training will give them the confidence to try it. It just goes to show that we just need to keep trying and learning ourselves even as qualified teachers!”
